Here are some of the more than 200 email letters of support that EarthWorks received and that were delivered to Mayor Filner on Monday, January 7. And believe it or not - there were even better ones than this that came in while we were putting things together.... this particular set was given to the Mayor's office and Todd Gloria's office in Powerpoint slides.

What is really great is that we didn't provide any samples or form letters - we simply asked people to share authentically their experience and what Earth Day means to them. Some of them are truly amazing.

TAKE PRIDE This is what we do together and what we have done together!

Even if we can't do EarthFair this year, we know we've made a difference - and done the best we could to keep it going. But I have a feeling it's moving in our direction.

We have removed last names to preserve our supporters privacy.

“Each year the EarthFair is the absolute top priority event for outreach and networking for San Diego Canyonlands and hundreds of other non-profit groups. We sign up dozens and sometimes hundreds of volunteers every year for our volunteer Canyon Friends groups throughout the city. We reach thousands of citizens with our educational messages indicating actions people can take to help the city achieve water quality, species conservation and other environmental goals. Having this event, consistently and routinely at Balboa Park has served to deliver tens of thousands of participants each year. It has become a tradition that thousands of San Diegans enjoy every year like an annual, environmental holiday. It seems that things can be arranged to safely and reasonably accommodate this incredible landmark event without much disruption of other projects. Please ask city staff to work it out. “
Eric, San Diego Canyonlands

“…every year the EarthFair is the Super Bowl of Balboa Park …. Based just on the economic contribution to the community (not to mention the environmental benefits of having one of the largest EarthFairs in the country)”
Dave, 92129

“Please I urge you to reinstate the permit for Earth Day San Diego. It helps move forward business innovations and it is so important for tens of thousands of people. Thank you very much Mayor.”
Pam, 92110

“I have attended Earth Day since I was a kid. I look forward to the event yearly. It is one of the only fairs that is always child friendly. If you don’t allow the permits you will forever be known as the ‘Mayor who killed Earth Day’”
Jessica

“…prior to attending EarthFair, I had spent little time in Balboa Park. When I saw banners advertizing an exhibit at the art museum, I was very interested and returned the following weekend to go to that exhibit. I became aware of the many wonderful museums in Balboa Park because I attended EarthFair.”
Jean, 92109

“The EarthFair is critically important to bringing awareness to environmental issues…e.g. water conservation, gardening, recycling, alternative energy, etc. Every year I’ve gone, I’ve learned something new.”
Angela

“This event combines big and small businesses, civic groups, schools and concerned individuals that care about the environment and the place they love, in a world class and well-recognized location that demonstrates that San Diego cares and is actively finding ways to contribute to a better world. The wide media coverage on TV, radio and newspapers over the years demonstrates that to the rest of the country and increases our visibility to tourists and businesses.”
Deris and Sky, Cleardome Solar Thermal, 92122

“Please begin your term as Mayor by not forcing this important Earth Day festival to cease to exist. Show us you understand what it means to have a free and public park where such events can educate and entertain the public – residents and tourists alike.”
Rev. W.

“EarthFair is my biggest show of the year! It is great way for me to connect with a conscious, local crowd that cares about ethical choices… It’s a great event for the City.”
Justine

“Please allow the Earth Day event to take place as usual. … It is a key annual event in many ways for Victory Gardens San Diego.”
Richard

“This is the largest free Earth Day celebration in the world, putting San Diego on the map. The Fair is a vital venue for community building and providing local green businesses with a unique opportunity opportunity to meet potential clients in a beautiful setting…. You secured my vote, along with thousands of others because we believe that you support environmental preservation and progress. I urge you to preserve the tradition of EarthFair in 2013 and years to come.”
Elyssa, City Heights

“There is no other place that small organizations such as mine (San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy) can get such exposure. Don’t take it away.”
Bill, 92037

“The EarthFair is San Diego largest gathering of hearts and minds in celebration of the Earth and healthy living… I would be sorry to see this event shortchanged by a lesser location.. And would be especially heartbroken if the event did not occur at all…. Please work … to find a creative, vibrant solution and support this exciting event in our community.”
Daniel, 92107

“Please do not disappoint me and thousands of people who supported you primarily because we believe that you understood what so many people do not – that there is no Planet B. EarthFair has been our best way to get that message out.”
Bob

“EarthFair provided such valuable feedback and networking that we were able to launch our business. We continue to go to EarthFair to try new products, meet local businesses, organizations and find ways that we can help them go green and reduce waste. Each year we attend we able able to continue to grow and expand our company, which helps us hire more employees and create jobs locally. As a green business owner that travels around the nation to green events, I know that EarthFair is the best event we go to and it would be a shame not to continue it.” The fact that it is a free even makes it more accessible to people which is lacking in traditionally green “high end” markets. EarthFair itself makes an emphasis about being a waste conscious event and this constant education helps make San Diego a cleaner city.”
Ciara

“I was pleased to support your campaign for mayor, largely because of your record and stands on environmental issues. I have every expectation that you will be able to find a way to keep EarthFair in Balboa Park for 2013 and beyond.”
Masada

“Please allow the EarthFair to take place… I am the founder of The Water Wise Kid’s Club.” Each year elementary students from thoughout San Diego plan and look forward to taking part in the Kids Parade showing how we can help save water and protect Mother Earth. The setting is very nice and at the same time we introduce the kids to other attractions located in the Park. Last year we visited the Hall of Champions after the parade.”
Robin

“Earth Day in Balboa Park is a special and touching thing… .Please don’t take Earth Day away from the people of San Diego. You would be remembered for along time and not favorably for such an action by a large proportion of your constituency.”
Mike

“It saddens me greatly that the Park & Recreation Dept has started to deny events. Earth Day has been at Balboa Park since it’s start and cleans up after itself, brings thousands of people to the park and promotes healthy ideas. … to deny events is a sad turn of events and not conducive to a free and open park. I happen to have been a volunteer logistics chair of the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk for 2011 and 2012. We also have been told that the park is moving toward now allowing events. As I understand it he descent (sic) is from the lessees which I have a hard time believing more people in the park does not help them. … The park is a public domain and should remain so for events. Please reconsider.”
Bertram

“I am confident that your administration will find a better solution to meeting the needs of the 99% of park users rather than canceling their free event in favor of parking for the special 1% who are patrons of gated fee for entrance venues.”
John, City Heights

“Please do not change the location of the Balboa Park Earth Day Festival. They year after year have taken extraordinary measures to ensure the least amount of impact to the park while providing this community a chance to get together, learn how to take better care of themselves and their environment.”
Melissa

“This event is recognized as the largest and most respected of Earth Day events in the world – a point of pride for the City of San Diego. We are and have been for a number of years, a member of the Natural History and Reuben H. Fleet museums ( as well as at least once yearly visitor to the Museum of Art, Museum of Man and various special events at the Park) and have always believe that the annual EarthFair is a natural fit for both the general theme of the Park’s emphasis on science and human understanding of the world. My wife and I strongly urge you to reconsider… we supported your campaign for mayor partly in the hope that you would be a good steward for San Diego’s natural beauty and health environment. Please stand with us on this issue. “
