Each year, EarthWorks recognizes businesses, clubs, organizations and/or individuals that deserves special recognition for their work on behalf of a clean, healthy environment. All too often, these organizations' and individuals' efforts go unrecognized and unacknowledged. Attend the V.I.P. Reception and help us acknowledge these extraordinary efforts.

We depend upon members of the San Diego community to nominate their own environmental heroes. There are no restrictions on who may be nominated. It could be a student that has setup a recycling program at their school... a restaurant that has converted to recycled paper products... a biomedical company that has replaced water-intensive plants around their facility with drought-tolerant native species... a government department that has eliminated pesticide use.. a non-profit organization that is promoting zero-emission vehicles... the list of possibilities is endless.

The 2014 E.A.R.T.H Award Winners

  • Anirudh Suri: 6th grader's ground-breaking battery recycling program.
  • Theresa Sinicrope Talley and Adina Batnitzky: understanding and promoting local sustainable seafood choices.
  • Dingeman Elementary School: student-driven, school-wide breakthrough recycling program.
  • Sullivan Solar Power: solar power systems for low-income families.
  • San Diego Marriott: closes the food-waste loop by composting hundreds of tons of food waste and returning it to the farmers for the next growing cycle.

The 2014 Sun Catcher Awards

Each year, we choose a number of E.A.R.T.H. Awards winners, as we did this year. However, some years - again, like this one - when this process is complete we are left with a strong set of worthy nominees that it is inappropriate to pass by. To this end, we added the Sun Catcher Awards, so that we can extend our acknowledgement to this extended family of environmental champions.

The 2014 Sun Catcher award winners are:

  • San Diego Reuse & Repair Network • The Irvine Company
  • Masada Disenhouse - SanDiego350.org • Gobie H2O
  • San Diego Mesa College - Canyon Day Committee • Girl Scout Troop 6786
  • Jessica Connolly - Ember Arts • Equinox Center
  • Physical Therapy For All • True Market Solutions, Inc.
  • Steven B. Wright - 4 Walls International • Mike Hansen

EarthFair Volunteer Awards

San Diego EarthWorks’ annual EarthFair in Balboa Park is the largest free environmental fair and Earth Day celebration in the world. Significantly, the event is produced by around 400 volunteers.

This large group of volunteers, many of whom are volunteering for the first time, is managed by a cadre of about 30 team leaders. Many of these team leaders come back year after year to produce this landmark event.

We take this opportunity to honor the team leaders who have volunteered for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years, and - for the first time this year - 25 years!

This year's EarthFair Volunteer Award recipients are:
